|Wang Yi: Adhere to the General Direction of the Political Settlement of the Syrian issue|
On the evening of January 21, 2014, Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov of Russia in Montreux, exchanging views on the Geneva II Conference on the Syrian issue.
Wang Yi said that the Geneva II Conference on the Syrian issue was held as scheduled, which is an important step forward. We hope that both sides in Syria should not only start the talks, but also strive to keep on. The Chinese side issued five proposals on the political settlement of the Syrian issue yesterday. At the moment, it is vital to cease fire and end violence as soon as possible, form the consensus on the big framework of the peace talks in the first place, and at the same time, set up the follow-up mechanism to keep the dialogues and negotiations from being interrupted and the political efforts from being stalled.
Sergey Lavrov noted that the situation of the Syrian issue is very complicated, and the only way out is to get the Syrian government and the opposition factions to directly start talking, and to reach the consensus on the future of the country. China and Russia share consistent position on the political settlement of the Syrian issue, and we hope both sides continue to maintain close communications.
